AUGUST FAIR 2019 & MONKSTOWN PARISH CHURCH TOUR

The Medal Society of Ireland would like to thank everyone who attended Saturday's Medals, Militaria and Collectables Fair.
As the first event since the death of Michael Denieffe, treasurer, member and friend, his absence was keenly felt.

The success of each fair owes much to the members who help with the set up and take down, to all who come and trade at the event and to members and public alike who visit to buy, swap, share and enquire. Representatives of the Western Front Association were a welcome addition at the fair.

Congratulations goes to Finbar who won the traders' draw. Any person wanting to have a table at the next fair on 2nd November please confirm your requirements with Austin Fennessy, Fairs Advisor, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it as soon as possible.

A number of members and guests of the M.S.O.I. took part in a tour of the magnificent Monkstown Parish Church which has been justifiably described as a 'glorious extravaganza'. We walked around this 188 year old marvel designed by Semple and admired the stained glass windows and the array of splendid memorials.

One hundred and fifty five men and women, from Monkstown, volunteered to serve in the First World War, and the names of 28 who never returned are inscribed on a memorial. There are also memorials to those from the parish who died in the Second World War and to individuals who fought in battles as far back as Waterloo.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Rector and his staff for the use of the Knox Memorial Hall over the last number of years.

Due to a shortage of time the Annual General Meeting has been postponed and will take place within the next few weeks in conjunction with the autumn lecture.

Obituary

We regret to announce the death of one of the most prominent medal researchers and collectors of the last one hundred years, Oliver D. Cresswell, who has probably done more for medal collecting than anyone else on this island. His book 'Irish Medals' has become the standard reference work for those collecting medals to Irish units in the British Army. It was first published in 1961 and a second edition was printed in 2009. Oliver was recently made an Honorary Life Member of the MSOI.

Our sincere condolences to his wife, Sylvia, and his family.
